While others are producing quality wines from what have become the de-facto “standard varieties” in California—Chardonnay, Cabernet, Zinfandel, and lately, Syrah, Avanguardia produces only blended wines from unusual and exotic varietals, predominantly Italian, which we have secured over the years and planted in our vineyard near Nevada City. Only estate grown fruit from our over twenty varieties is used for blending. Our all-Italian white, Selvatico, features the Northeastern Italian indigenous vine Tocai Friulano supported by our exclusive selections, Peverella and Forastera. Blends based on Sangiovese, Barbera, and the true French Gamay Noir are among the reds offered. We are on the cutting edge of the blending craft—Avanguardia means avant-garde in Italian. Montoliva Vineyard & Winery

The original settlers of Chicago Park were first-generation Italian-Americans from Chicago, Illinois. The vineyards of Chicago Park bear witness to their quest to start a community in the untamed West that mirrored their homeland. Their spirit lives on at Montoliva Vineyard & Winery. Founded in 2000, Montoliva Vineyard & Winery creates Tuscan-inspired wines of uncommon depth and character. Mark Henry was one of the first to plant the prized clones of Sangiovese introduced by Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo, and the first to plant the southern Italian Aglianico in the North Sierra Foothills. This, combined with the old world tradition of close planting, Montoliva is blessed with a bounty of high-quality fruit. In the winery, Mark takes his cue from the esteemed wines of Montalcino. Long, slow fermentations using special Tuscan yeasts, extended macerations and barrel aging all play to the strengths of Sangiovese and Aglianico grapes, crafting wines that are muscular, deep and complex. Bottlings include Sangiovese, Aglianico, Sinistra (a "Super Tuscan" blend), Pinot Grigio, and Syrah.
