Several years ago, plans for a welcome monument began to
form. The idea was to create an attractive structure
that represents the unique history of Nevada County.
After over three years of effort and $20,000 in
fundraising, the Highway 49 Gateway Monument has been
completed.
The
monument stone was placed north of Bear River along the
east side of Highway 49 near the intersection of Highway
49 and Rincon Way.
Dedication ceremonies took place on October 4, 2006. At
approximately 7-feet tall by 12-feet wide, the monument
was designed and constructed by Rob Conover of Sandstorm
Signs and is made of local natural stone.
The
community joined together to contribute to the success
of the monument. Excavation work, landscaping, and cash
donations came from businesses, private individuals and
civic organizations. The monument is quite an
achievement that reflects the pride we have in our
country and will welcome travelers to Nevada County for
many years to come.
